YEAR 6

During Term 3, Year 6 students are studying a novel called ‘Wonder’. ‘Wonder’ is a novel about a child called August who is born with a facial abnormality. August is home-schooled for the first few years of primary school before joining a mainstream school.

Auggie settles into the first few months of school and his classmates slowly get used to the way his face looks. He becomes friends with Jack, and with a girl named Summer who sits with him at lunch on the first day. Soon a rumour about August is spread around the school and the students avoid him at all costs. He slowly becomes alienated.

Auggie’s story is shared through the eyes of other key characters as he continues to grow and develop into a young man. He faces many challenges throughout the novel but eventually overcomes many. By the final stages of the novel, almost everyone has at last warmed up to him and wants to be his friend.

Students’ Insights:

‘This book has got some kind of touch to the heart. It is so sad that people look at him in that sort of way. The book is really amazing though!!!!’

-Cidra Chkhaydem

‘I love the fact that it's original and has its own movie, so you can understand more if you couldn't understand much through the book. I also love the dramatic events, that isn't really all that dramatic but fun to read, like when August finds out he has to go to school, but his parents didn't tell him for a while (like a couple of months).’

-Dema Ihsan

‘I love that August has a kind family and they are trying to make him confident and stronger and it doesn’t matter what he looks like. They are making him more confident in going to an actual school.’
